Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
