Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
